The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly influenced home cooking habits, with more people cooking at home and making healthier choices. The lockdowns and restaurant closures have prompted many to rediscover the joys of home-cooked meals and experiment with new recipes and techniques.

In the following sections, we will delve into changes in cooking frequency, trends in meal planning and preparation, as well as the rise of healthier eating choices during the pandemic.

Shifts in Cooking Frequency

woman, man, kitchen cooking statistics 2023

As the pandemic forced us to stay home, it’s no surprise that many turned to cooking as both a necessity and a creative outlet. Studies have shown that a significant number of people increased their cooking frequency during this time, with some even cooking daily or multiple times per week. A mere 8.4% of Americans spent over an hour preparing a weeknight meal, yet the data reveals mothers averaging 75 minutes in the kitchen, with fathers trailing at around 43 minutes. This highlights how different individuals and households adapted their cooking routines during the pandemic.

With more time spent at home, the opportunity to explore new recipes and techniques became a welcome distraction. Cooking shows and online resources saw an increase in viewership as people sought inspiration and guidance for their culinary endeavors. This newfound enthusiasm for home cooking not only provided a sense of accomplishment but also fostered healthier eating habits as families came together to enjoy home-cooked meals.

As home cooking became more prevalent, the popularity of meal planning and preparation also increased. On average, Americans spend around 400 hours in the kitchen each year, and it’s no surprise that many Americans cook regularly. Interestingly, cooking statistics show that 80% of women compared to just 40% of men are likely to cook and take responsibility for planning and prepping meals in the family. This highlights the importance of meal planning in managing busy schedules and ensuring balanced diets for many Americans.

The adoption of meal planning allows individuals to:

  • Conserve time and money
  • Facilitate a healthier lifestyle
  • Have better control over portion sizes, ingredients, and nutritional content
  • Reduce food waste, as groceries are purchased with specific recipes in mind

In a time when health and well-being are of utmost importance, the rise in meal prepping has undoubtedly contributed to a more stable food supply, eating healthier, and fostering better eating habits as people learn to prepare meals efficiently.

Healthier Eating Choices

The pandemic has undeniably encouraged healthier eating choices, with more people opting for home-cooked meals over fast food and takeout options. In fact, over the past two years, there has been a growing trend towards home cooking and healthier eating. As people spent more time in their kitchens, they became more conscious of the ingredients they used, often opting for healthier and more sustainable options.

Cooking at home allows for greater control over portion sizes, ingredients, and cooking methods. This has led to a shift in eating habits, with many discovering the benefits of whole, unprocessed foods and fresh produce. As a result, there has been a significant increase in the number of people embracing healthier eating choices, leading to a lasting impact on overall health and well-being.

Generational Differences in Cooking Habits

frog, cook, love cooking statistics 2023

Different generations have varying cooking habits, with distinct skills, techniques, and preferences. Factors such as cultural influences, food availability, and societal trends all play a role in shaping the way each generation approaches home cooking.

Next, we will examine the distinctive cooking skills and techniques across generations, how much time they spend to cook dinner, and their favorite meals and ingredients.

Cooking Skills and Techniques

Each generation brings its own set of cooking skills and techniques to the table, influenced by cultural and societal factors. For example, research suggests that younger generations like Gen Z and Millennials are more likely to use technology and online platforms like TikTok to learn new cooking techniques and discover recipes. In contrast, older generations may have acquired traditional cooking skills through hands-on experience and inherited family recipes.

The exchange of knowledge between generations is essential in keeping culinary traditions alive and fostering creativity in the kitchen. As younger generations embrace modern cooking techniques and experiment with global cuisines, they also benefit from the wisdom and experience of their elders. This fusion of traditional and contemporary skills and techniques enriches our culinary landscape and offers a diverse range of delicious dishes for all to enjoy.

Time Spent in the Kitchen

Time spent in the kitchen varies across generations, with older individuals typically spending more time cooking than younger ones. Gen Z and Millennials usually spend around 53-55 minutes preparing food, while the average modern adult spends only about an hour cooking and preparing food each day, which is almost half the time their parents spent in the kitchen.

This difference in time spent in the kitchen can be attributed to various factors, such as:

  • the availability of convenience foods
  • the use of technology in meal planning and preparation
  • shifting societal norms around gender roles and family dynamics.

Regardless of the time spent in the kitchen, each generation brings its unique perspective and approach to home cooking, contributing to a rich and diverse culinary heritage.

Preferred Meals and Ingredients

Preferred meals and ingredients differ among generations, reflecting changing tastes and dietary trends. Here are some examples:

  • Generation Z tends to gravitate towards natural, organic foods and menus that promote clean eating.
  • Baby Boomers are more likely to purchase specialty ingredients for food preparation.
  • Millennials, often dubbed the “foodie” generation, have a refined interest in their food, exploring new tastes and flavor combinations while also preferring simpler ingredients and flavors.

These generational preferences showcase the diversity of tastes and culinary interests that exist within our society. As each generation shares its preferred meals and ingredients, they contribute to a rich tapestry of flavors, techniques, and culinary wisdom that benefits all who enjoy home cooking.

Achieving a harmonious and delicious result relies on selecting the right base spirit for your infusion. While a neutral spirit like flavor vodka is the safest bet for most infusions, don’t be afraid to explore darker spirits such as rum, bourbon, or brandy for specific flavor combinations. For example, bourbon and vanilla bean, cinnamon stick or dried herbs create a uniquely flavored rum that pairs exceptionally well with fruit infusions.

Your personal taste significantly influences the choice of the right spirit for your infusion. Remember, the exciting world of spirit infusions is all about creativity and discovering new flavor combinations that appeal to your taste buds.

Selecting and Preparing Flavorful Ingredients

Creating infused spirits bursting with flavor requires fresh ingredients, ripe fruits and vegetables or grapefruit juice complemented by whole or coarsely ground dried herbs and spices. Additionally, you can enhance your infusion with citrus peels, sweeteners, or other exciting flavors like vanilla bean. By carefully selecting and preparing your ingredients, you can create a straight flavor infusion that will impress your friends and elevate your home bartending skills.

This section delves deeper into the world of infusion ingredients, shedding light on fruits and vegetables, herbs and spices, and additional mild flavors that can elevate your infused spirits. So, let’s jump in and start creating some truly unique and delightful infusions!

Fruits and Vegetables

When it comes to fresh fruits and vegetables, always choose in-season, fully ripe, and preferably local and organic produce for the best flavor. Clean your fruits and vegetables thoroughly, removing any dirt, dust, or inedible parts, and chop them into medium-sized to small size for intense flavors and infusion. For citrus fruits, you can either slice them or use wedges, and even include the zest as an accent flavor in your infusion.

Different fruits and vegetables require various preparation techniques; for example, berries should be washed and left whole, with stems removed from strawberries and skins scored on harder berries like cherries. For vanilla beans, wash and slit them lengthwise to extract the full flavor during infusing liquor, perfect for making vanilla ice cream.

Remember, fruits and vegetables may take up to a week, but often just 5 days, to release their incredible flavor, so be patient and let the infusion work its magic.

These tools will help you prepare your ingredients, store your infusion in infusion jars or a liquor bottle, and strain the finished product with ease.

The Infusion Process: A Step-by-Step Guide

Upgrade Spirits With Flavor - 7 Tips 37

Having chosen your spirit, prepared your ingredients, and gathered your tools, you’re set to embark on the thrilling journey of spirit infusion. The infusion process consists of three main steps: combining ingredients and alcohol, storing and steeping, and straining and bottling.

The upcoming subsections provide a step-by-step guide leading you through the infusion journey, from the initial blending of ingredients and alcohol to the final straining and bottling. Follow these steps, and you’ll be well on your way to creating unique and flavorful infused spirits that will impress your friends and elevate your home bartending skills.

Combining Ingredients and Alcohol

The infusion process begins by combining your selected fruits, vegetables, herbs, spices, and infused liquors in a clean, airtight jar. This will allow the flavors to mingle and infuse alcohol into the spirit, creating a delicious and unique infusion recipe.

Make sure the jar is large enough to hold all the ingredients and alcohol, leaving some room for the infusion to breathe and develop its flavors.

Storing and Steeping

Having combined your ingredients and alcohol, store the jar in a cool, dark place and give it a daily shake to distribute the flavors evenly. The steeping process allows the flavors to infuse into the spirit over time, with some ingredients requiring only a few days, while others may need weeks to achieve the desired flavor intensity.

Be patient and taste test your infusion periodically to determine when it’s reached its peak flavor.

Straining and Bottling

Once your infusion achieves its desired flavor intensity, proceed to strain and bottle the finished product. Pour the infused spirit through a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth, capturing any remaining particles and ensuring a clean, clear final infusion.

Bottle your strained infusion in a clean, airtight glass container, and store it in a cool, dark place until you’re ready to enjoy your delicious creation.

Mastering Infusion Times

A key aspect of successful spirit infusion is mastering the optimal infusion times for different ingredients. The infusion time can vary greatly depending on factors such as:

  • fruit ripeness
  • heat in peppers (if using)
  • potency of herbs and spices
  • ABV of the base spirit

Some ingredients, like hot peppers, a Serrano pepper may infuse in as little as an hour, while others, such as mild and sweet peppers, can take weeks to achieve the desired intensity.

By understanding and experimenting with different infusion times, you can create unique and flavorful infusions tailored to your personal taste preferences. Don’t be afraid to taste test your infusion periodically to determine when it’s reached its optimal flavor intensity, and keep in mind that over-infusing can result in bitter or off-flavors.

Key Takeaways for Easy Baked Brie

About Brie and Camambert

Brie is a creamy soft cow’s-milk cheese named after the region from which it originated. It has been made in the town of Meaux, east of Paris, since the 8th century – originally by the monks of the Priory of Rueil en Brie. It was originally known as the “Queen’s Cheese,” or later, the “Queen of Cheeses,” and was enjoyed by both nobility and peasants alike. Today, it is so popular and versatile it’s sometimes referred to as the “little black dress” of cheeses.

True French Brie must be made in the Seine-et-Marne area south of Paris, but many countries now commercially manufacture a similar cheese which is sold as Brie. Brie de Meaux is widely considered the finest French Brie, followed by Brie de Melun.

Camembert is another soft rich cow’s milk cheese, originating from Normandy, in Northern France. According to legend, Camembert was first made in 1791 by Marie Harel, a farmer from Normandy, after receiving advice from a priest who came from Brie. Today, most Camembert is no longer made in Normandy because the name was not protected. If you want to experience the original, look for “Camembert de Nomandie.

What’s the Difference

In addition to where they are made in France, there are a number of other differences between these two soft elegant cheeses. Both Brie and Camembert are cow’s milk cheeses and have a similar flavor, but Brie is generally milder with a creamy, buttery taste, while Camembert has a deeper, more earthy and intense flavor and aroma.

Size-wise, Brie is often sold as a wedge of the larger wheel, while Camembert is usually sold as a whole wheel. Traditionally, a wheel of Brie measures between 9 and 17 inches in diameter, while Camembert is usually just 5 inches across. Many grocery stores now carry “baby Brie”, which is similar in size to Camembert — this is what is what the recipes in this blog use.

Brie and Camembert are available in supermarkets and specialty stores and are great at both room temperature or baked.

Are they interchangeable in these recipes?

They can be interchangeable, but they do have notably different flavors that will cause the recipe to taste quite different, depending on which you use.

Why is it in a wooden box?

In 1890, an engineer, M. Ridel, devised the wooden box to carry the cheese and allow it to stay fresh for longer distances, such as to America where the box remains popular today. It also allowed for branding. Over time, some cheesemakers also found another use for the boxes in the aging room. Cheese wheels are often aged on a rack and turned daily at the start of the aging process to ensure even aging. Larger wheels can be very delicate when they are young, and the boxes help protect the cheese.

Are the cheese rinds edible?

Yes. You can eat the rind of Camembert, Brie, or any soft-ripened cheese. The white is a natural mold which helps ripen the cheese and prevents the soft, voluptuous interior from drying out. While some prefer to cut the rind off, many find it adds texture and flavor to the cheese.

Tips for Cooking and Preparation

Start cool. If you need to cut into the cheese (e.g. I advise cutting off the top, or cutting holes into the cheese in some of my recipes), it’s easier to do so after it’s been chilled in the fridge for at least 30 mins., but generally, cheese is easier to work with when at room temperature.

Smaller is better. While Brie and Camembert can come in many sizes, you’ll want to use the smaller size for my small Baker and the larger size for my large Baker. For these recipes 7 oz. or 8 oz. cheese sizes are best and the perfect size for 2-4 people.

Improvise. If you don’t want to heat up your kitchen, or are short on time, putting the cheese and Baker in the microwave for 60-90 seconds works well for most recipes. Adjust cooking time as necessary for your microwave.

Try a theme. Picking a theme for your gathering can be fun and gives you a chance to try new recipes. Try a French wine and cheese party. Share your stories about trips to France or favorite French foods and encourage your friends to share their stories. Love Mexican? Prepare a variety of Mexican dishes, including brie topped with jalapenos and salsa, served with tortilla chips. Then get some fun decorations and photo props people can interact with. Viva Fiesta!

Experiment & have fun. Try other things besides cheese in your baker. I’ve found it’s great for a variety of foods, like corn bread, macaroni & cheese and warm dips. The possibilities are endless!

Serving Suggestions

Plain crackers, fresh baguette slices or flatbread crisps are convenient serving choices that won’t detract from the cheese.

Tapas are small plates of various appetizers and snacks. Tapas are an integral part of Spanish culture and a delightful way to bring people together. In this blog, we will explore the art of entertaining with 11 Popular and Tasty Tapas in Spain to try.

From the history and culture behind this culinary tradition to tips on how to create a memorable tapas party of your own. I was engaged in Barcelona and have traveled there over 40 times. I will share some of my experiences with you in this blog. “Vamos a Explorer.” (let’s explore)

The History and Culture of Tapas

The word “tapas” is believed to have originated from the Spanish verb “tapar,” which means “to cover.” Legend has it that tapas were born out of necessity when bartenders in Spain started placing slices of bread or ham on top of glasses of wine to keep out fruit flies. This practice not only served a practical purpose but also encouraged patrons to order more drinks. Over time, tapas evolved from simple slices of bread to a wide variety of small, flavorful dishes.

We have a favorite tapas spot in Barcelona. All the tapas have toothpicks. You select your tapas from a bar (shown below). At the end of the night, you give the bartender your plate with all your toothpicks and they know what to charge on your bill!

Today, tapas have become an integral part of Spanish culture and dining. They are enjoyed in bars, restaurants, and homes across the country, and they often take center stage at social gatherings and celebrations. The act of sharing tapas fosters a sense of camaraderie and encourages lively conversation and laughter. It is fun to try several different tapas and compare with others. It’s no wonder that tapas have gained popularity worldwide as a unique and enjoyable way to entertain.

When planning a tapas party, one of the most exciting aspects is selecting the dishes you’ll serve. Tapas dishes cover a wide variety of foods. This allows you to cater to a wide range of tastes and preference. Here are some classic tapas options to consider:

Pairing Tapas with Spanish Wine

No tapas party in Spain is complete without the perfect wine pairing. Spain boasts a wide variety of wines, and selecting the right ones to complement your tapas is key to a successful gathering. Here are some popular Spanish wines and their ideal tapas pairings:

Rioja: A classic red wine from the Rioja region that pairs well with a variety of tapas, especially those with meat or cheese.

Albariño: A crisp and refreshing white wine from Galicia, perfect for seafood tapas like Gambas al Ajillo.

Cava: Spain’s answer to champagne, cava is a sparkling wine that goes wonderfully with olives, Jamón Ibérico, and other salty tapas.

Sherry: A fortified wine from the Jerez region, sherry pairs beautifully with cured meats and cheese, making it an excellent match for a charcuterie-style tapas spread.

Manzanilla: A type of fino sherry, Manzanilla is an ideal accompaniment for seafood tapas like Boquerones en Vinagre.

Sangria: Simple, traditional Red Spanish Sangria made with simple methods and just 6 ingredients. The perfect fruity beverage that’s adaptable and delicious! Recipe

The ambiance of your tapas party plays a crucial role in ensuring your guests have an enjoyable experience. Here are some tips for creating a fun tapas atmosphere:

Decor: Embrace Spanish decor with warm colors, rustic tableware, and perhaps a bullfighting or flamenco theme. Consider using vibrant tablecloths, decorative tiles, and colorful plates. Having some bowls for olives, spicy oily dishes is helpful. Some Ideas

Music: Set the mood with traditional Spanish music. Flamenco guitar or lively rumba tunes can transport your guests to Spain. Choices

Seating: Arrange seating to encourage socializing and mingling. Opt for communal tables or a combination of standing and sitting areas.

Lighting: Use soft, warm lighting to create an inviting atmosphere. Candles, lanterns, and string lights can add a touch of romance.

Flowers: Decorate with fresh flowers, especially red and yellow blooms, which are synonymous with Spain. Ideas

Informal Setting: Tapas parties are all about informality, so encourage your guests to help themselves and serve from communal platters.

Entertaining with Tapas: A Step-by-Step Guide

Now that you’ve chosen your tapas dishes, selected the perfect Spanish wines, and set the ambiance, it’s time to host your tapas party. Here’s a step-by-step guide to ensure your event goes off without a hitch:

Preparation: Prepare as much as possible in advance to minimize stress on the day of the party. Many tapas dishes can be made ahead of time and reheated when needed.

Timing: Coordinate the timing of your dishes so that they are served at their best. Hot tapas should be served hot, while cold tapas should be chilled.

Presentation: Pay attention to presentation. Use colorful platters and garnishes to make your tapas visually appealing.

Labeling: If you have guests with dietary restrictions or allergies, label each dish to ensure everyone can enjoy the spread without worries.

Serving: Serve the tapas in waves, starting with a few cold options and gradually introducing the hot dishes. Encourage guests to take small portions so they can try a variety of flavors.

Wine Pairing: Introduce each wine as it’s served and explain its pairing with the tapas being offered. This adds an educational and interactive element to the party.

Enjoy: Don’t forget to relax and enjoy the party yourself. Engage with your guests, share stories about the tapas and wine, and savor the delightful flavors of Spain together.

Conclusion
